Further Informations
Bread stamps were used for various reasons, such as marking one’s own bread baked in the communal oven; as trademarks of bakers, like our reconstruction; as a weight indication, for control by the authorities, but also for religious purposes, e.g. for labeling kosher bread. The stamp is pressed into the bread before baking.
The stamp we made is a reconstruction with the imaginary inscription PP.F = Popidius Priscus fecit, meaning: made by Popedius Priscus. In Pompeii (AD 79), bread was made daily in local bakeries. Finds from the bakery (pistrinum) of Popidius Priscus in Pompeii show that, in addition to a mill, there was also a large oven in the bakery that was used to bake the bread. Because his bakery did not have an attached shop, the bread was probably resold to other shops or to street vendors called libani.
