Further Informations

The bread reconstruction is based on the shape of the Roman bread preserved in Pompeii in the year 79, which is now on display in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napolii.

This bread, known as ‘pani quadratus’, has the typical cake shape to make it easier to break into pieces. Even before it was baked, it was embossed with a stamp naming the baker of the bread. PP.F is the invented inscription for Popidius Priscus fecit, which means: the bread was made by Popedius Priscus. In Pompeii, bread was made daily in local bakeries. Finds from the bakery (pistrinum) of Popidius Priscus in Pompeii prove that in 79 AD, in addition to a mill, there was also a large oven in the bakery that was used to bake the bread. The string, which wrapped the loaf horizontally and was also baked, made it easier to carry the bread home.
