Profile Planorbarius corneus
Habitat
Silent waters in lowlands with rich vegetation, tolerates periodical droughts. Their blood – like human blood – contains hemoglobin, which may lend these snails a bright reddish color.
Sources
Europe and W Asia, scattered distribution, often artificially introduced.
Further Informations
It is the only European snail species that has haemoglobin and therefore red-coloured blood. Due to the high oxygen affinity of haemoglobin, the post horn snail can also survive in very low-oxygen waters.
