Profile Eucobresia glacialis

glass snail

Habitat

It lives in moderately damp locations between rocks and herbaceous stands, on alpine meadows, grassy strips in the rock and scree slopes with vegetation almost exclusively above the tree line. In Switzerland, it has been found in the canton of Valais up to 2900 metres above sea level. In Austria it occurs between about 1000 and 3100 metres above sea level. In Switzerland it was found in the altitude belt between 2000 and 3000 metres. 1)

Sources

The species only occurs in the high alpine regions of the Alps in France, Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany (Allgäu and Berchtesgaden Alps). According to Alba et al. (2004), it is also said to occur in the Catalan Pyrenees. 2)

Further Informations

The glass snail (Eucobresia glacialis) is a ‘semi-naked snail’ from the family of glass snails (Vitrinidae) and belongs to the land snails (Stylommatophora). In glacier glass snails, the shell is already so reduced and embedded in the mantle that they can no longer withdraw into it.

The species is extremely rare and is on the Red List in Germany.
