The radula is an anatomical structure used by mollusks for feeding, sometimes compared to a tongue. It is a minutely toothed, chitinous ribbon, which is typically used for scraping or cutting food before the food enters the food pipe. The radula is unique to the mollusks, and is found in nearly every class of mollusk.
Within the gastropods, the radula is used in feeding by both herbivorous and carnivorous snails and slugs. The arrangement of teeth (denticles) on the radular ribbon varies considerably from one group to another.
Depending on pictures of a scanning electron microscope of the radula of the snail Sadleriana cavernosa which has a simple structured radula the model was built 2300 times larger than the original. Abstracting the most important shapes and the repetition of the teeth every tooth can be felt, the shape, the sharp edges without the risque of injury.
