Profile Ips typographus
Habitat
Larvae of the European spruce bark beetle feed in the inner bark up to 10 m along the stem. It prefers Picea (main host), Abies, Larix and Pinus.
This beetle prefers physiologically weakened, damaged, windthrown, recently felled or overmature trees and can cause large damage in forests. The larvae feed several birds for excample the spotted woodpecker.

“Die Weibchen bohren einen Gang in die Rinde und legen etwa 30-60 Eier in Einischen am Rand des Ganges. Von dort aus fressen sie geschlüpften Larven und erzeugen dabei das typische Fraßbild. Dass die Gänge zum Ende hin breiter werden, ist mit dem Wachstum der Larven zu erklären. Sie verpuppen sich am Ende des Ganges. Nach dem Schlüpfen bohren die Käfer ein Loch in die Rinde und gelangen so ins Freie.” 1)
