Further Informations

There are lots of variations and names of this bread man in Germany. We offer the one, which is traditional in the Rhineland and Lower Rhine region. Common with gypsum-pipe and raisins the crumpet is made around the St. Martins day (November 11th). At this day children use to walk after sunset with there home made candle-lit lanterns on a stick through the streets following a man on a horse who is dressed as St. Martin. The walk ends at a bonfire where St. Martin is sharing his coat with a poor man and the children get a bag with sweets and the traditional bread man. The bread man is an example for other bread figures which are backed and eaten at special occasions and structure the year of church and farmers life.
