Melanocetus johnsonii

Description of the model:
The scientific model was done under supervision of Dr. Walter Etter (Natural History Museum Basel, Basel (CH).
The model was produced for the special exhibition “Deep sea” from 23rd March till 4th November 2012 in the Exhibitioncenter in Rosenheim LOKSCHUPPEN.
Thanks to the film by marine biologist Laia Valor off the coast of Tenerife, we were able to gain new information and have adapted our model.
The model is made of reinforced epoxy resin and coloured using non-fade colours. We used glass eyes. The female glows active with a LED light.

Further Informations
The female attracs with its glowing organ small crustaces. The thiny mail fix itself at her body and stays his whole life with her. Nevertheless it is no parasite and can swim active and searchs his food. The lateral line organ projects from the body, rather than being contained in a narrow groove; this may increase its sensitivity.
