Habitat

Larvae of the European spruce bark beetle feed in the inner bark up to 10 m along the stem. It prefers Picea (main host), Abies, Larix and Pinus.
This beetle prefers physiologically weakened, damaged, windthrown, recently felled or overmature trees and can cause large damage in forests. The larvae feed several birds for excample the spotted woodpecker.
