Gastropoda
Order: Achatinoidea
Family: Achatinidae
The species is believed native to West Africa, within 100-180 miles of the coasts of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Togo, Dahomey, Ghana, and Nigeria.
The species' population size is curtailed by disease and often it has no other natural enemies. Each snail lays up to twelve hundred eggs per year making its huge size and large population a potential problem. However this snail is an important source of animal protein for West African forest-dwelling tribes, and commercial farming of these snails holds great promise.
The models are made of high quality epoxy resin and coloured using non-fade paint and varnish.
