Romain Bread

Life-size model

Further information

The bread reconstruction is based on the shape of the Roman bread preserved in Pompeii in 79 AD, which is now exhibited in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napolii.

This bread, known as "pani quadratus", shows the typical division to make it easier to break into pieces. Even before baking, it was embossed with a stamp that names the baker of the bread. PP. F is the imaginary inscription for Popidius Priscus fecit, which means: the bread was made by Popedius Priscus.  In Pompeii, bread was made daily in local bakeries.

Finds of the bakery (pistrinum) of Popidius Priscus in Pompeii prove that in 79 AD there was a mill and a large oven in the bakery, which was used to bake the bread. The string that embraces the loaf horizontally and was baked with it made it easier to carry the bread home.

Our reconstruction is also available as a tactile model.
